Best States to Visit in the USA (2026 Guide)

If you only have a handful of trips to spend on the United States, Utah, Hawaii, Colorado, and North Carolina consistently offer some of the best combinations of scenery, outdoor adventures, culture, food, and unforgettable road trips. Each destination shines for a different reason, so there isn’t one perfect answer. The best state to visit depends on your travel style, budget, and the time of year you plan to visit.

The United States is home to fifty incredibly diverse states, each offering a completely different experience. You can spend one vacation exploring red rock deserts, another hiking through snow-capped mountains, and another relaxing on tropical beaches without ever leaving the country. Distances between attractions also vary dramatically, making planning just as important as choosing the destination itself.

Whether you’re looking for national parks, historic cities, food-focused vacations, scenic road trips, or affordable adventures, the states below consistently rank among the best places to visit in America.

For National Parks And Desert Scenery: Utah

Utah is often considered one of America’s greatest road-trip destinations thanks to its incredible concentration of natural beauty. The state’s famous Mighty 5 national parks—Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef—can all be visited during a single extended road trip.

Each park offers something completely different. Zion National Park features towering sandstone cliffs, emerald pools, and iconic hikes like Angels Landing and The Narrows. Bryce Canyon is known for its thousands of orange hoodoos rising from the canyon floor. Arches National Park contains more than 2,000 natural stone arches, while Canyonlands showcases dramatic mesas, deep canyons, and panoramic overlooks. Capitol Reef remains one of Utah’s quieter gems with scenic drives, hiking trails, and historic orchards.

Spring and autumn provide the most comfortable temperatures. Summer often brings daytime highs exceeding 100°F in southern Utah, making early morning hikes essential. Winter creates a completely different landscape, especially at Bryce Canyon, where snow contrasts beautifully against the red rock formations.

Salt Lake City serves as an excellent starting point for many visitors, while nearby Park City offers mountain scenery, skiing, hiking, shopping, and restaurants throughout the year.

For Beaches And Island Culture: Hawaii

Hawaii delivers an experience unlike anywhere else in the United States. Rather than thinking of Hawaii as a single destination, it’s better to think of each island as its own unique vacation.

Oahu combines world-famous Waikiki Beach with Pearl Harbor, vibrant nightlife, excellent restaurants, and surfing culture. Maui attracts visitors seeking scenic drives along the Road to Hana, whale watching during winter months, and unforgettable sunrise views from Haleakala National Park.

The Big Island offers active volcanoes, black sand beaches, lava fields, and diverse climates ranging from tropical rainforest to alpine landscapes. Kauai, often called the Garden Isle, is famous for its lush valleys, dramatic sea cliffs, waterfalls, and quieter atmosphere.

Although Hawaii tends to be one of America’s more expensive destinations due to flight costs and accommodation prices, many travellers find the scenery worth the extra expense. Inter-island flights are relatively short, making it practical to visit two islands during a week-long holiday.

For Mountain Towns And Outdoor Sports: Colorado

Colorado is an outdoor lover’s paradise throughout every season. Winter transforms mountain towns like Aspen, Breckenridge, Telluride, and Vail into internationally recognised ski destinations, while summer opens thousands of miles of hiking trails, mountain lakes, and scenic drives.

Denver has evolved into one of the country’s best cities for craft breweries, independent restaurants, coffee shops, and live entertainment. Many visitors spend a few days exploring the city before heading into the Rocky Mountains.

Rocky Mountain National Park offers alpine lakes, wildlife viewing, and spectacular mountain scenery within easy driving distance of Denver. Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved road in a US national park, usually remains open from late spring until autumn depending on snowfall.

Because many popular destinations sit well above sea level, visitors should allow time to adjust to the altitude by staying hydrated and avoiding strenuous activity during their first day.

For History And Southern Food: North Carolina

North Carolina combines mountain scenery, historic towns, coastal beaches, and one of America’s most distinctive food cultures.

The western side of the state is dominated by the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Blue Ridge Parkway, one of America’s most scenic drives. Asheville has become a favourite destination thanks to its vibrant arts scene, independent breweries, and the magnificent Biltmore Estate.

Further east, Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill form the famous Research Triangle, known for universities, museums, restaurants, and technology companies.

The Outer Banks provide miles of unspoiled coastline, historic lighthouses, and opportunities to see the famous wild horses roaming the beaches near Corolla.

Food is another highlight. Eastern North Carolina barbecue traditionally uses a vinegar-based sauce, while western styles incorporate tomato-based sauces, giving visitors the chance to compare two regional traditions on the same trip.

For Food And Music Culture: Louisiana

Few states offer as much cultural identity as Louisiana. New Orleans alone attracts millions of visitors every year thanks to its music, festivals, architecture, and world-famous cuisine.

The French Quarter remains the city’s most recognisable neighbourhood, filled with historic buildings, jazz clubs, street performers, and restaurants serving classics like gumbo, jambalaya, beignets, and po’boys.

Frenchmen Street is often preferred by locals for its authentic live music venues, while nearby Garden District showcases beautiful historic homes and oak-lined streets.

Outside New Orleans, visitors can explore Cajun Country around Lafayette, take guided swamp tours through bayous, or enjoy small-town festivals celebrating Louisiana’s French heritage.

Although Mardi Gras is the busiest season, spring and autumn often provide pleasant weather with smaller crowds and more reasonable accommodation prices.

For Budget Road Trips: Tennessee

Tennessee stretches from the Great Smoky Mountains in the east to Nashville’s music scene in the middle and Memphis’s blues and barbecue heritage in the west. Great Smoky Mountains National Park charges no entrance fee, unlike most other major national parks, which keeps a park visit genuinely low cost.

Nashville has become considerably more expensive for lodging over the past several years as its tourism has grown, so travelers on a tighter budget sometimes base themselves in nearby towns like Franklin and drive in for the day.

For A Classic Northeast Fall Trip: Vermont

If autumn colours are your priority, Vermont deserves a place at the top of your travel list.

From late September through mid-October, depending on elevation and annual weather patterns, the state’s maple forests transform into spectacular shades of red, orange, and gold. Scenic drives become attractions in themselves as visitors explore winding country roads lined with historic farms, covered bridges, and charming villages.

Popular towns such as Woodstock, Stowe, and Manchester welcome visitors with local cider mills, farmers’ markets, artisan shops, and cosy inns.

Vermont is equally rewarding outside foliage season. Winter attracts skiers to resorts like Stowe Mountain Resort and Killington, while summer offers hiking, kayaking, cycling, and peaceful countryside escapes with fewer crowds.

How To Choose Between Them

Matching the state to the trip matters more than chasing a single best answer. A few starting questions help narrow it down.

If the goal is hiking and dramatic landscapes, Utah and Colorado both deliver, with Utah leaning drier and redder and Colorado leaning higher and greener. If the goal is beach time without leaving the mainland, North Carolina’s Outer Banks are a solid middle ground between the crowds of Florida and the price of Hawaii. If food and music matter more than scenery, Louisiana and Tennessee both build a trip around a specific cultural identity rather than a checklist of sights.

Final Thoughts

There is no single “best” state to visit in the USA because every traveller values something different. Utah excels for unforgettable national parks, Hawaii offers world-class beaches and island culture, Colorado combines mountain adventures with vibrant cities, North Carolina balances history and coastline, Louisiana celebrates food and music, Tennessee provides excellent value, and Vermont delivers one of the world’s most beautiful autumn landscapes.

By matching your destination to your interests, budget, and travel season, you’ll enjoy a trip that feels tailored to your style rather than simply following the most popular tourist route.
