Is Stockholm Expensive? What Things Actually Cost in 2026

Is Stockholm expensive? Yes, by most European standards, though it is not the priciest place in Northern Europe, and your final bill depends on where the money goes. Hotels and restaurant dinners drive most of the cost, while museums, public transport and supermarket food sit much closer to the European average.

This guide breaks down 2026 prices for visitors and residents, shows what a realistic day costs, and covers the swaps that cut a budget without making the trip worse.

How Stockholm Compares With Other Big Cities

Stockholm is the most expensive city in Sweden. Numbeo ranks it 35th on its cost of living index, while New York sits at 12th. International Insurance’s May 2026 summary of that data puts Stockholm consumer prices about 19% below New York’s.

Against European neighbors, Numbeo figures reported by Relocate.me show a single person spending about €171 more per month in Stockholm than in Berlin, and about €1,427 less than in London. That puts the city in the middle of the big-city range.

Across the Nordics, the same index puts Sweden’s cost of living below Norway, Finland, Iceland and Denmark. Stockholm Spirit’s budget guide also calls the city slightly cheaper than Oslo on average, mostly because of alcohol. The city feels costly mostly to visitors arriving from places with far lower daily prices.

Hotel Prices and When They Jump

Accommodation is the biggest single line in a Stockholm trip. Amimir’s hotel price tracker, in a May 2026 snapshot, put the average double room at $193 a night, with January near $104 and June near $224.

Summer is the squeeze. Stockholm Spirit’s 2026 budget guide says July and August rooms cost two to three times winter rates, and it advises booking at least three months ahead.

For a sense of the tiers, The World Was Here First puts an average mid-range hotel near €120 a night, a nicer room above €200, and a hostel bed from about €25.

If your dates can move, early autumn gives pleasant weather without the peak markup. Stockholm Spirit’s seasonal table rates September as the best overall value of 2026.

Apartment hotels with a kitchen run about $130 to $200 a night in Radical Storage’s 2026 numbers, which can pay back if you cook breakfast and a few dinners. Radical Storage also lists boat hostels at $45 to $80 a night, a distinctly Stockholm way to cut the room cost.

Is Stockholm Cheaper in Winter?

Yes, noticeably. Radical Storage reports hotel rates falling 30 to 40% from November to February, and the Vasa Museum’s lower October to April ticket saves about 19% against its summer price.

The trade is weather. Temperatures sit around 0 to 5°C, according to the same guide, and daylight is short, so plan indoor days around museums and cafés.

What Food and Drink Cost

Restaurants and Bars

Eating out is where visitors feel the sting. Pacific Prime’s 2026 figures list an inexpensive restaurant meal at about $18 and a mid-range dinner for two at about $115. International Insurance, citing Numbeo, calls casual dining affordable by European standards and puts a three-course dinner for two between $65 and $163, so the spread inside the city is huge.

A pint runs around 75 SEK, according to GetCostIdea’s 2026 roundup. Wine and spirits cost more in bars, and bottles bought in shops come only from the state-run Systembolaget.

Service is included in Swedish menu prices, and tipping is optional, so there is no automatic 15 to 20% to add on top.

Lunch Deals and Groceries

Many restaurants run a weekday lunch special, called dagens lunch, with a main course, salad, bread, and often coffee at one fixed price. It usually comes from the same kitchen as the dinner menu at a lower cost, so making lunch your big meal is the easiest saving in the city. Stockholm Spirit builds its moderate daily budget around exactly these lunch specials.

Supermarkets such as ICA, Coop and Willys sell ready salads and sandwiches for far less than cafés charge. Tap water is free and safe to drink, so there is no need to buy bottled water.

Getting Around Without Overspending

Visit Stockholm lists a single SL ticket at 43 SEK, valid for 75 minutes across metro, bus, tram, commuter train and some ferries. Day, 72-hour, and 7-day passes also exist, but third-party sites quote conflicting prices for them, so check the SL app for the current number.

A day pass generally pays for itself after about four single rides, so count your planned trips before buying. Gamla Stan, Norrmalm and Södermalm sit close enough to walk between, and the Djurgården ferry from Slussen is covered by an ordinary SL ticket.

Cash is not accepted on buses, and riding without a valid ticket carries a 1,500 SEK penalty fee, according to Visit Stockholm.

The Airport Transfer Most Visitors Overlook

The first big expense can arrive before you reach your hotel. Published 2026 prices for the Arlanda Express train run from about 320 to 340 SEK one way for an adult, depending on the source, and SL cards are not valid on it.

The Flygbussarna airport bus costs about 119 to 129 SEK and takes around 45 minutes, so a solo traveler saves roughly 200 SEK each way by choosing it. Stockholm Spirit estimates about 124 SEK one way by commuter train, a single SL fare plus a station supplement, which lands close to the bus price.

Children travel free with paying adults on the express train, according to Routes North, so a family can come out ahead on the train.

Sightseeing Costs

Attractions are where Stockholm comes closest to normal European pricing. The Vasa Museum charges 195 SEK from October to April and 240 SEK from May to September, with free entry for anyone under 18, according to the museum’s 2026 price sheet.

A guided tour is included in individual admission, and the museum takes cards only. A combined ticket with the neighboring Vrak wreck museum costs 359 SEK for adults and stays valid for 72 hours.

Visitors at the Vasa Museum, where the answer to is Stockholm expensive is more forgiving

Skansen runs about 250 SEK in summer, per Stockholm Spirit. Walking the old town, crossing the parks, and riding the decorated metro stations cost nothing beyond a transit ticket.

Who Finds Stockholm Cheapest

The same trip costs very different amounts depending on who is traveling. Children, teenagers, and students up to age 20 pay a reduced SL fare of 26 SEK, according to Visit Stockholm, and under-18s enter the Vasa Museum free.

Solo travelers get the weakest deal, because one person carries the full price of a hotel room that a couple would split. Couples and families also share the airport transfer and the cost of the occasional taxi.

A Realistic Daily Budget

Published estimates vary, and the spread is wide. The World Was Here First suggests €80 to €250 per person per day, and Radical Storage puts the average 2026 tourist at $210 to $240.

Stockholm Spirit breaks it into tiers: roughly 550 to 700 SEK a day for a backpacker, 1,200 to 1,600 SEK at a moderate level with a budget hotel and lunch specials, and 2,000 to 2,800 SEK for a comfortable mid-range trip.

So is Stockholm expensive for a week-long stay? A moderate traveler should plan on about 8,400 to 11,200 SEK in total daily spending, using those figures, before flights and souvenirs.

Monthly Costs for Residents

Residents see a different picture because rent dominates. Numbeo data summarized by GetCostIdea shows about 12,507 SEK a month for a single person and 44,862 SEK for a family of four, both excluding rent.

A city-center one-bedroom sits near 16,138 SEK a month in the same summary, and utilities for an 85 to 95 square meter flat add about 2,740 SEK.

Wise puts the average net monthly salary near £2,934, against roughly £2,384 in total living costs for one person. The harder problem is finding a lease, since first-hand rental contracts often involve long queues and newcomers end up subletting at higher rates.

Smart Ways to Cut Your Costs

Book outside June to August if you can. The gap between January and June hotel averages above is more than $100 a night, which is bigger than most savings available on food.

Stay a few metro stops from the center instead of on the waterfront. Rooms there often cost less, and the metro still reaches the center in minutes.

Make lunch the main meal, pick up a coffee and cinnamon bun at a bakery instead of a full restaurant stop, and carry a refillable bottle. A card with no foreign transaction fee matters too, since the Vasa Museum and city buses take cards only.

Picnic in Djurgården or Rålambshovsparken with supermarket food, as Stockholm Spirit’s guide suggests, and an afternoon costs little more than the groceries.

Check the Stockholm Pass against the actual entry fees of the sights you want. It pays off only when you plan several paid attractions a day.

Hotel rates, SL fares and museum tickets change each year, and several third-party sources disagree on pass and airport prices, so confirm final numbers with SL, the Vasa Museum and your hotel before booking.
